Long Distance Adoption

The long distance adoptions at Nkoni are intended to support a child through secondary school until they attain their diploma, as Michael has done (see [photos from 2002])

We have decided not to undertake adoptions for the elementary school children, so as not to create a difference between them: they are very many and chances are that many would not be adopted... We prefer to ask those who wish to make a contribution to them to adopt them all by supporting the expenses for their meals and the further construcion of the school ([more information]).

The distance adoptions requires 264 € yearly for 6 years of secondary school (4 in the Teacher Training Institute, 2 of practice).

The student will after the two years of practice at an institute return to teach at the Nkoni school for another two years after the training. In this way are trying to create a virtuous circle of child-student-teacher in the area, without which the young would need to go to Kampala (the capital) to finish their studies, leaving the school with a constant difficulty of finding teachers.

The adopted student regularly sends letters and report cards (3-4 times a year), and likewise the manager of the school (Christopher Kalemba) sends letters and drawings from the younger students, reports on the costs and activities and the construction work on the school (latrine, well, vegetable garden etc).

The deposits - mainly for the adoption of individual children for the continuation of their studies - are usually done at the beginning of October, as the school year in Uganda begins in January.

For the adoption of a student we ask that you have a serious commitment to continiue for the 4+2 years of the studies (remember that an adoption can be done by a family, or a group of people).
